I've mentioned Texas Rep. Joe Barton here before. His financial support by large telcos make his stand on net neutrality suspect to say the least. Now he's pushing for a law requring ISPs to retain data on everything you do online. It's "for the children" of course. How much later will it be that this data is used for other purposes? Simply having it available is dangerous.
"Building massive electronic warehouses with details on what Americans are doing online would create an irresistible temptation for data thieves. Trial lawyers, divorce attorneys, and anyone else with a creative lawsuit would try to delve into those warehouses for their own purposes--it wouldn't be limited to child protection or terrorism investigations. And, of course, serious criminals would use anonymous Wi-Fi connections at a local coffeehouse or library anyway."
This data may be abused in many ways. The Center for Democracy and Technology has issued a statement detailing manditory data rention as invasive, risky, unnecessary and ineffective.
