Online columnist Ian Brockwell says the cables may have been cut deliberately in an attempt by the US and Israel to deprive Iran of internet access.
Others back up that theory, saying the Pentagon has a secret strategy called 'information warfare'.
I doubt the purpose of the cuts - if deliberate - were to deprive anyone of service. Rather, the cuts simply provided cover for the real purpose; installing in-line monitoring systems. On the other hand, if that was the purpose, bringing them down almost simultaneously doesn't seem very wise if you wish to avoid suspicion. Maybe they were fishing for some vital information and couldn't afford to wait.
Again, I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I'm not saying this was an intelligence operation - but it could be. And that seems to be enough for some people.
