Play Station Portable and TiVo

With the Christmas season upon us it's difficult to find time to keep the blog updated, but I'm going to make a concerted effort to update daily. Every day there are new, interesting, aggrevating or wierd things happening in the world, and I don't want you to miss a bit of it.

One thing has been eating up my time that's not travel or Christmas related. I recently got a Sony PSP (I know, I said Sony was evil and should be boycotted, but I didn't pay for the PSP so it doesn't count).

I'm not much of a gamer (I'm about in the middle of Half-Life 2 after six months) but the PSP is so much more than a game machine. It has an incredibly nice 16:9 screen. It plays movies and MP3s, has wireless networking, and even a web browser. The user interface could use some work, but generally it's pretty cool.

Of course, being a Sony product means it uses proprietary Memory Stick Duo cards (but so does my phone and camcorder). It also uses a new disk format called UMD; basically a small DVD in a cartridge that holds about 1.8GB (I seem to recall the movies are encoded in MPEG4).

So, playing movies is cool but you're limited to what's released in UMD format. Not only that, but they are generally more expensive than a DVD, and you can't play them on anything but the PSP.

Fortunately, there are other ways to get video on your PSP. For example, TiVo has annouced that it's TiVo-To-Go option will be expanded to allow you to download recordings to both video Ipods and PSPs (in addition to the Windows Media Players they already support). Well, that's a nice annoucement, but it may take as long as April of next year before I see it. I can't wait that long!

My next entry will show how to put your TiVo recordings on a PSP today!
