Britsh Home Secretary John Reid recently said the UK might have to "modify" some freedoms to prevent their "misuse and abuse." He asks "What price our security? What price our freedoms?" and it appears to me his answer is that the price of security is the reduction of freedom. Indeed, our own government also believes that one can not increase security without diminishing freedom. I think most citizens believe that as well, but is it true? And if it is true, is it worth the price?
I say that surrendering liberty in order to preserve it is newspeak nonsense. To prevent the terrorists from winning, we simply have to maintain our free and open society. They might kill a few of us, but they will not have won. Like our forefathers we may have to pay for that freedom with our blood; pay for it by accepting that some will abuse those freedoms and use them against us.
