Designing The Orion
Popular Mechanics has a nice little article on the engineering of the Orion spacecraft, which will replace the Shuttle and eventually be used for new manned lunar missions. Hard decisions must be made concerning abort systems, landing systems, thermal protection - and we haven't designed a new manned spacecraft since the early 70's. If you're like me (and you are sometimes) you'll enjoy this story of how we'll get back to the Moon - assuming civilization holds together long enough.
