Franklin's Prediction

On the final day of the Constitutional Convention, Ben Franklin urged the documents adoption, although he didn't think liberty would last.

He thought the government "...may be a blessing to the people if well administered, and believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable of any other. "

Franklin realized that no matter how the government was limited in the Constitution, it would only work as well as the people who executed and administered its power allowed. Since people are flawed, he believed the new nation would eventually become corrupt and despotic, as we are witnessing today.
