Military Closing Mountain Complex

The Dener Post is reporting that NORAD's operations center will be moving from Cheyenne Mountain to nearby Peterson AFB, and the Air Force Space Command is looking to move it's operations to Vandenburg. According to the paper, Adm. Tim Keating, who heads both NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command, will make the announcement sometime today.

The rationale is that it's pretty unlikely we'll have a missle attack from Russia or China.

Keating said he'd like to keep the complex in a "warm standby" mode so it could be brought online within an hour if needed.

This calls for another short War Story. When I left the 1st Combat Comm Group, I was assigned to Cheyenne Mountain, however those orders were changed while I was on leave, and I was diverted to the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center in Denver. I was really disappointed being moved from NORAD and the ultimate in cool to a building full of accountants. Oh well.
